Once upon a time, Parks and Rec was the comedy that filled my little heart with joy every time I watched it. There are only a couple shows that do that for me, and New Girl has filled that void now that Parks and Rec is off the air.
New Girl has had its ups and downs, but there are little dynamics between the characters that are absolutely golden. This week, we got another Cece and Winston mess-around, with Winston and Cece shopping for wedding gowns, drinking some champs, dancing to Pati LaBelle, and making truly horrible fashion choices, like a non-refundable light-up wedding dress.
Winston: “You look like a prostitute for wizards.”
Cece: “I look like a bullfighter in space.”
This is a non-romantic pairing of two people who are forming a wonderfully weird friendship, and it’s rare for TV. At the end of the episode, Cece asks Winston to be one of her Bridesmaids (Bridesmen?) and he accepts, and of course he does. Winston is a ride or die friend, one we could all use when getting into some shenanigans at the bridal shop.
New Girl may be an ensemble show, but the real heart of the series lies in these friendships. And it’s these unexpected character pairings that bring something special to the screen, both humorous and heartfelt.
